This bank holiday weekend, education news stories include reports on the admission of children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) at an academy in Sale, Trafford.
The Dean Trust admission of SEND pupils
On Sunday 29 May the Sunday Times reported that The Dean Trust had been accused of “segregation” after announcing plans to send children with SEND to another of their schools for lessons. The piece reflected the concern of parents whose children had been due to take up places at the Outstanding-rated Ashton on Mersey school but will instead go to Broadoak School.
The Trust’s Chief Executive said the move was necessary because of the high number of children with SEND already attending Ashton on Mersey school, emphasising that they “continue to explore how best” to fulfil the terms of each child’s Education and Health Care plan. The piece was followed up by the Guardian on Monday.

We are aware of the concerns at Ashton on Mersey School and we are in discussions with the council and the academy trust. Our priority is ensuring that the transition from primary to secondary school for pupils is as smooth as possible.
