Today, Tuesday 22 October, the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) has published research which shows that young people with visual impairments are not being provided adequate support, due to a lack of investment in specialist education services. This has been covered by the Guardian.
A Department for Education spokesperson said:
We are working with various organisations including the National Sensory Impairment Partnership, to make sure that all schools meet their training needs in relation to SEND. We want all schools to be able to equip their workforce to teach children with SEND, including pupils with vision impairment.
We have also recently announced an increase to high needs funding that local authorities receive of £780 million in 2020-21 – which is an increase of more than 12% on the amount available this year, bringing the total spent on supporting those with the most complex needs to over £7 billion.
